The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced its first modern fish market at Bhandewadi under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The project, to be built on civic land, has been given a two-year completion window with scope for extension if required.
Estimated to cost several crores, the facility will replace the scattered, unhygienic fish-selling points that dot Nagpur today. It will feature dedicated wholesale and retail sections, hygienic flooring, advanced drainage, scientific waste disposal and cold storage units to preserve fish quality. Officials say this will help cut spoilage losses, which currently touch 20–25% in the fisheries sector.
Construction will be guided by a Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared after geo-technical soil investigations, traffic and catchment surveys, and land profiling. The DPR will include Auto-CAD drawings, structural designs, bar-chart timelines, cost estimates and environmental safeguards.
The market aligns with the vision of PMMSY, launched in 2020 with an investment of ₹20,050 crore, aimed at enhancing fish production, modernising post-harvest management, and building sustainable value chains. Nagpur’s facility will be the first of its kind in Vidarbha, with potential to serve neighbouring districts as a central hub for trade and distribution.
Local officials believe the new market will significantly improve livelihoods. Nagpur currently lacks a centralised fish market, forcing traders and fisherfolk to work in poor conditions. The Bhandewadi facility will bring commerce under one roof, lower transaction costs, ensure safe products for consumers, and deliver better returns to fishing communities.
Once operational, it will set a new benchmark for civic markets in Maharashtra, combining traditional trade with modern infrastructure.
