The United Arab Emirates, a global leader in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) production, witnessed an unusual aviation incident involving one of its own carriers. An Air Arabia flight from Nagpur to Sharjah was forced to land around 51 nautical miles short of its destination after reportedly running low on fuel mid-route.
What made the situation even more startling was that passengers were completely unaware of the unfolding issue. Upon touchdown, many unbuckled their seat belts and began preparing to disembark, assuming they had reached Sharjah. Only then did the cabin crew inform them that the aircraft had actually landed at Ras Al Khaimah.
The flight, Air Arabia G9-416, departed from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, at 5:15 am — about 20 minutes later than its scheduled departure time of 4:55 am. The Airbus A320 was operating at nearly full capacity, with almost all seats occupied.
Intended to cover a distance of 1,321 nautical miles between Nagpur and Sharjah, the aircraft managed only 1,270 nautical miles before landing at Ras Al Khaimah in the early hours of October 3. Refueling took just a few minutes, but the flight remained grounded for nearly an hour and a half while awaiting a landing slot at the busy Sharjah airport. Eventually, the plane took off again and arrived safely in Sharjah, much to the relief of passengers — several of whom were Nagpur residents traveling to visit relatives in the UAE.
