43 proposals received from zone offices; ₹15 crore to be spent on complete resurfacing
After weeks of heavy monsoon rain battered Nagpur’s roads, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to undertake complete resurfacing of nearly 50.45 km of damaged city roads through its Hotmix Department. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari approved the plan following a review meeting held at the end of September.
According to Hotmix Department officials, 43 proposals covering around 250 small and large roads were received from various zone offices. The total resurfacing area is estimated at 2.23 lakh square metres, and the overall expenditure is pegged at ₹15 crore. The highest number of proposals—11 each—came from Laxminagar Zone and Asinagar Zone, while Hanuman Nagar, Nehru Nagar, and Lakadganj Zones submitted only one proposal each.
Officials said that despite continuous patchwork using jet patchers and Insta patchers, potholes kept reappearing due to persistent rainfall. Hence, a full-scale asphalting drive was found necessary. “Pothole filling was no longer effective in many stretches, so complete resurfacing was the only solution,” said Ajay Dahake, Executive Engineer, Hotmix Department.
The department has already begun preparations, targeting completion of 10 major stretches before Diwali and the remaining roads within a month. The decision follows repeated public complaints and media reports highlighting the poor condition of city roads during the monsoon.
