Starting October 8, 2025, Indian users will be able to approve UPI payments using facial recognition or fingerprint authentication, according to Reuters, which cited sources familiar with the development.
According to a media report, the authentications will be done using biometric data stored under India’s unique identification system-Aadhaar, one of the sources said.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently permitted certain alternative authentication methods for digital payments, moving away from the existing system that relies on a numeric PIN.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI, intends to demonstrate the new biometric feature at the ongoing Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai. NPCI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
