Bringing long awaited relief to thousands of sanitation workers and their families, the state government has approved the implementation of the Lad Committee’s recommendations in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). With this, 4,407 sanitation workers will now be absorbed into NMC’s permanent service, ensuring job security and continuity for their heirs.
The decision grants employment rights to the heirs of retired or deceased sanitation workers, ending years of uncertainty over job regularization. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and city legislators were instrumental in pushing the issue forward.
Under the new order, 8,560 sanitation posts have been sanctioned by the government, including the 4,407 awaiting absorption. The proposal, submitted by NMC Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari, has now received formal approval from the Urban Development Department.
Previously, workers employed on supernumerary posts lost their position after retirement, creating an administrative hurdle for their heirs. This restriction has now been lifted, opening the door for 3,841 heirs of sanitation workers who retired or passed away between September 2019 and May 2023 to receive appointment rights.
Additionally, 421 workers who completed over 20 years of service will also benefit under this decision. Eligible heirs must apply to the NMC Commissioner within one year to claim their rightful employment.
This landmark move marks a major step toward job justice and dignity for Nagpur’s sanitation workforce and their families.
