Opposing the privatization of the electricity sector, officers and employees from all three state-run power companies — MahaVitaran (distribution), MahaGenco (generation), and MahaTransco (transmission) — have gone on strike from midnight on Wednesday.
The strike has been called under the leadership of the Maharashtra State Electricity Employees, Engineers and Officers Action Committee. The protesting workers allege that the government’s move toward privatization will adversely affect public interest, threaten job security, and increase electricity costs for consumers.
Essential services may face disruptions if the strike continues, and the committee has urged the state government to immediately withdraw any plans related to private participation in the power sector.
