After the recent declaration of reservation for the Zilla Parishad (ZP) chairpersons and Panchayat Samiti presidents, political attention has now shifted to today’s (Monday) draw for group and circle reservations across Nagpur district. The Rural Development Department has scrapped the previous reservation pattern and introduced an entirely new system. Under the revised method, reservations will be allotted afresh based on descending population order, making today’s outcome crucial for all political parties and aspiring candidates.
Nagpur’s rural belt has traditionally been regarded as a Congress stronghold, with the party enjoying dominance in the last ZP elections. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has significantly expanded its base in recent years. Out of the six MLAs representing rural Nagpur, five are from the Mahayuti alliance — four from BJP and one from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena — while only one belongs to Congress.
In the 2017 ZP elections, Congress won 32 out of 58 seats, followed by BJP with 14, NCP with 8, and others sharing the rest. With the new draw expected to redefine the distribution of seats among Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs, today’s lottery is set to influence the political dynamics for the upcoming local body elections.
The draw for ZP groups will be conducted at 1 PM in the District Collector’s office under the chairmanship of Dr. Vipin Itankar, while the Panchayat Samiti circle draw will be simultaneously held at respective taluka headquarters.
