After years of public complaints over darkness and safety issues, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched a major smart lighting project to illuminate Sonegaon Lake, making the popular spot safer and more inviting after sunset.
Persistent appeals from residents and local groups prompted the move. “The lake looks beautiful during the day, but turns unsafe after dark,” said Neha Deshmukh of Parate Nagar. “We’re glad NMC has finally acted.”
The project will feature energy-efficient LED and solar-powered lights, including underwater lamps, motion-sensor pathways, and decorative poles to enhance both visibility and beauty. The goal: to transform the lakefront into a secure, family-friendly evening destination.
To maintain quality and accountability, NMC will appoint a technical auditor to monitor design, installation, and electrical safety, ensuring the use of durable, energy-efficient materials.
“We received multiple complaints about darkness and safety,” said R. U. Rathod, Executive Engineer (Electrical), NMC. “This modern, eco-friendly system will resolve those issues while adding a new visual charm to the lake.”
The setup will incorporate smart automation systems and solar energy to cut electricity use and maintenance costs. Programmable LEDs will light up the lake in different colors for festivals and civic events, giving it a vibrant, modern appeal.
Residents have warmly welcomed the initiative, calling it a much-needed revival that restores Sonegaon Lake as a safe, scenic, and smart public space, in line with Nagpur’s clean and green city vision.
