Nagpur: Nearly 36 out of 53 illuminated portraits of Bharat Ratna awardees installed along Asia’s longest multilayer flyover on Wardha Road have gone dark due to a power overload, raising concerns among commuters and citizens.
Following a report by Lokmat Times on October 13, the Green Foundation, which spearheaded the project, clarified that the malfunction was caused by excessive electrical load and assured that repairs are underway.
Foundation Responds to Glitch
Nishant Gandhi, Secretary of the Green Foundation, said the initiative to showcase portraits of the 53 Bharat Ratna recipients along the Maha Metro multi-layer flyover was executed in collaboration with Solar Industries. He added,
“Most of the portrait lights stopped functioning in recent days. We are aware of the issue, and technical expert Sanjay Borikar has been instructed to resolve it immediately. Restoration work is being carried out on a war footing.”
Technical Glitch Behind the Blackout
Borikar explained that each portrait was originally estimated to consume 60 watts of power during installation. However, after the lights were switched on, the actual load surged to nearly 400 watts. The existing cabling, designed for the lower wattage, could not handle the excess load, resulting in several lights going off or flickering due to overheating.
“We are currently replacing the faulty cables and attempting to restore power to a few portraits today. Only after that will we be able to estimate how long full restoration will take,” Borikar added.
The Green Foundation has assured that full illumination will be restored as soon as possible, ensuring the iconic flyover once again honors the nation’s highest awardees in a spectacular display.
