In a shocking cybercrime case, a Nagpur-based serviceman fell victim to a digital arrest scam, losing ₹19.70 lakh to online fraudsters who falsely claimed he was connected to the Pahalgam terror attack.
According to police sources, the accused sent a fake photo resembling a Pakistani location and alleged that the victim’s identity was linked to one of the Pahalgam attack suspects. The fraudsters impersonated senior officers from the CBI and local police, showing fabricated arrest warrants to intimidate the victim.
The cybercriminals claimed that the man’s Aadhaar card and bank account were under investigation in connection with the terror case. Under pressure, the victim transferred ₹19.70 lakh to accounts provided by the scammers to “avoid arrest.”
During the ongoing investigation, it was found that the fraudsters contacted the victim through a video call, showing visuals of police stations and officials to make their claims appear authentic. Later, realizing he had been duped, the victim lodged a complaint with the cyber police.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to trace the accounts and IP addresses used in the digital arrest fraud.
