Nagpur: As the city gears up for Diwali festivities, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Fire Department has stepped up vigilance to prevent fire-related mishaps. With thousands of shops selling fireworks across Nagpur, officials have warned that even a small lapse could trigger a major disaster during the festival of lights.
Inspection Drive from Friday
Starting Friday, the Fire Department will conduct a city-wide inspection drive to identify and act against unauthorised firecracker shops. According to officials, 828 licensed vendors have received permission to operate this year, but several others are believed to be running without registration or adherence to safety norms.
Strict action, including filing of legal cases, will be taken against violators found operating illegally after official notifications are issued. The drive aims to ensure that all shops comply with fire safety regulations, particularly those located in crowded commercial zones.
Emergency Preparedness in Full Swing
In preparation for potential emergencies, the department has conducted a complete inspection of 66 firefighting vehicles, including eight newly added fire tenders, to ensure readiness. Firefighters’ leave has been cancelled from October 20 to 26 to maintain full manpower during the festive period.
Acute Staff Shortage Persists
Despite expanding urban limits, the Fire Department continues to grapple with severe manpower shortages. Out of 870 sanctioned posts, only 125 are permanent employees, supported by 55 contractual firemen, 57 interns, and over 60 assistants from other departments.
Officials stated that while efforts are being made to maintain operational readiness, the shortage poses challenges in ensuring timely response across all fire zones.
The Fire Department has appealed to citizens and traders to cooperate by following safety guidelines and purchasing fireworks only from authorised outlets to ensure a safe and incident-free Diwali.
