Congress launches aggressive protest against civic collapse
Furious over the city’s filth just days before Diwali, Congress MLA Vikas Thakre on Monday issued a fierce warning to Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari, declaring that if garbage is not cleared within two days, Congress workers will dump the waste at the Commissioner’s house on Laxmipujan day.
Led by Thakre, Congress staged a stormy protest at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation headquarters, slamming the administration for its failure to maintain basic civic hygiene. The agitators accused the Commissioner of shielding inefficient garbage contractors, ignoring choked drains, erratic water supply, and the chaos created by unplanned road digging across the city.
Tempers flared as protesters breached police barricades and clashed with personnel outside the civic headquarters. The police had to shut the main gate to prevent the crowd from entering. After nearly two hours of slogan-shouting, Thakre and a delegation were finally allowed to meet the Commissioner.
During the meeting, the Congress demanded action against corrupt officials, cancellation of contracts of defaulting garbage firms, and justice for Sitabuldi hawkers, who they alleged were being victimized under “builder pressure.” They also demanded suspension of officers involved in the Nara Park protest crackdown by October 25.
Leaders including Atul Londhe, Prashant Dhawad, Rekha Barahate, Milind Dupare, and Anil Patil joined the protest. Thakre warned that if the administration fails to act, Congress will intensify its agitation and hold the civic chief personally accountable for the city’s rot during Diwali.
