1,099 Asha Sevikas in Nagpur gifted bicycles by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
The city’s trusted frontline health workers, the Asha Sevikas, who tirelessly visit every household to ensure maternal and child health, will now be seen pedaling through Nagpur’s lanes on bicycles. In a special initiative to boost their efficiency, 1,099 Asha workers serving within the Nagpur Municipal Corporation limits have been gifted bicycles by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The Chief Minister, while handing over the bicycles, said that this move would bring new “speed, energy, and dignity” to the work of Asha Sevikas.
“These women are the true health messengers of every family. With bicycles, their service will become faster and more effective,” he remarked.
The cycles are expected to significantly reduce travel time and help the Asha workers cover more homes each day.
Their daily duties include collecting health data, maintaining birth and death records, preparing lists of pregnant women, ensuring child immunization, and conducting nutrition awareness programs in urban settlements.
Until now, many of these tasks required long hours of walking between neighborhoods. The new bicycles will make their travel easier, saving both time and energy.
The project has been funded under the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (District Mineral Foundation).
The procurement process was completed through a tender, and the cycles have already been distributed to workers at all Urban Primary Health Centers.
Municipal Medical Officer Dr. Deepak Selokar informed that the initiative aims to empower women health volunteers and improve public health outreach. With their new wheels, Nagpur’s “Asha Tai” will now ride stronger — and reach every doorstep faster.
