Lesson learned after bus stood idle for 12 hours due to lack of charging points
Following The Live Nagpur’s earlier report highlighting the shortage of EV charging facilities, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has finally taken corrective steps. On October 11, one of NMC’s electric buses (MH 31 FC 6593) remained stranded for nearly 12 hours near the Swami Vivekanand Memorial after its battery completely discharged. The bus stood idle from 1 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., causing major inconvenience to passengers and motorists due to the unavailability of charging infrastructure.
After the issue was brought to light, the NMC administration swung into action. Out of the 11 EV charging stations planned under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, three have now been completed. These are located at Rahate Colony Square, the parking area near Patrakar Bhavan, and Wadi Naka on Amravati Road near Yashwant Stadium. All three facilities are now ready for public use.
Acting on the directions of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari, work on the remaining eight charging stations is being expedited. Once operational, the new network will benefit not only the city’s electric buses but also two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheeler EV owners. Officials hope this will prevent situations like the recent one where buses were forced to stand idle on roads for hours due to lack of charging points.
Meanwhile, work is progressing rapidly at Jaytala Bazaar Square, Dayanand Park, near Futala Road Police Chowki, Shantinagar, behind Anjuman College at Mangalwari Complex, and Central Bazaar Road. Citizens have urged NMC to complete the remaining stations soon to ensure the city’s growing EV fleet runs smoothly without disruption.
