Nagpur — One of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, Kamptee Road, has become a nightmare for motorists as ongoing construction work and deep potholes have made commuting both difficult and dangerous. The condition of the road, particularly near Uppalwadi Railway Underbridge (RUB), has deteriorated so badly that even pedestrians find it risky to walk, raising serious safety concerns among citizens.
The stretch between Kesar Gateway and Asha Hospital is in equally poor shape, with the uneven surface, protruding iron rods, and loose gravel posing a constant threat to commuters. Despite being a key route linking Nagpur with Kamptee and Kanhan, the administration has failed to maintain basic safety standards, forcing drivers to navigate through treacherous conditions daily.
While Metro Phase 2 construction is underway to ease traffic congestion between the city and Kamptee, it has only added to the woes of commuters. A Lokmat Times correspondent who visited the site on Sunday observed massive traffic jams, uneven surfaces, and dangerous exposed bars along the stretch, compelling motorists to take serious risks while passing through.
Local resident Kishor Mate highlighted that the road near Uppalwadi RUB has been in disrepair for months. “Due to construction work, heaps of mud and gravel cover the road, making it uneven throughout the year. Drain water remains stagnant 24 hours a day, and the authorities do nothing to clear the mess. We are forced to travel on a bumpy and unsafe road,” he said.
Another resident, Smita Rahate, pointed out that the area is home to several wedding lawns, hospitals, and celebration halls, which draw large crowds daily. “Traffic congestion is a regular problem here. Ambulances often get stuck midway, delaying patients’ access to hospitals. The poor road condition also poses serious risks for pregnant women and patients in transit,” she said.
The 200-metre stretch from Kesar Gateway to Asha Hospital is reportedly among the worst-affected. Potholes on both sides have expanded to the centre, increasing the risk of vehicles overturning. Locals say that while the hazards are visible during the day, they become life-threatening at night due to poor visibility.
Daily commuter Sameer Shahu shared, “I travel this route every day, so I know where the potholes are. But for those using this road for the first time or people coming from Jabalpur, it’s a death trap.”
Residents have urged civic authorities to immediately repair and resurface the road before it leads to major accidents, stressing that public safety must not be compromised in the name of development.
