Nagpur: A 37-year-old beggar has been arrested by Kotwali police for allegedly killing another homeless man during a quarrel at a temporary shelter near Gangabai Dahan Ghat.
According to police, the deceased, Suraj Shankar Meshram (35), a resident of Corporation Colony, Gangabai Ghat, earned his livelihood by cleaning the rest area and begging in the vicinity. The accused, Devaraj Bhajanlal Yadav (37), a native of Harai village in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, also stayed at the same shelter.
On the night of October 25, around 8.30 pm to 9 pm, an argument broke out between the two. In a fit of rage, Devaraj allegedly attacked Suraj with an iron rod attached to a broom, hitting him on the head. Suraj sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Mayo Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on October 30 during treatment.
Initially, the matter was registered as an accidental death. However, after the post-mortem report confirmed homicidal injuries, police converted it into a murder case. Acting on a complaint filed by API Santosh Boyne, PSI Mane of Kotwali Police registered an offence under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested the accused.
Further investigation is being carried out to determine the exact cause of the altercation and gather additional evidence.
