The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has proposed establishing a dedicated transport company — Nagpur Metropolitan Parivahan Limited — to streamline and modernise mobility services across the metropolitan area. The move, initiated under Section 18 of the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 2016, seeks to create a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to enhance connectivity, integrate multiple transport systems, and align mobility planning with regional development goals.
NMRDA currently oversees planning for 693 villages across nine talukas in Nagpur district, which includes rapidly growing urban and semi-urban belts. With Nagpur emerging as a major medical, education, and service hub, and neighbouring industrial zones like Butibori, Hingna, and MIHAN expanding quickly, traffic volumes have surged, straining existing transport infrastructure.
At present, buses, metro rail, and auto-rickshaws operate largely in silos, resulting in overlapping routes, uneven service quality, and weak last-mile connectivity. The proposed company aims to unify all modes under one platform, manage bus and feeder services, and introduce smart ticketing, including app-based and card-based systems. A focus on multimodal integration will ensure smooth transfers between the metro, buses, and other public transport modes.
The initiative prioritises an environment-friendly and citizen-centric mobility system, promoting affordable and reliable public transport to reduce dependence on private vehicles, cut congestion, and lower pollution. All future mobility projects will be aligned with NMRDA’s development plan to support coordinated urban growth.
After approval from the NMRDA board, the proposal will move to the state government for final sanction. Once cleared, the new company will function as an SPV under NMRDA, driving a unified and sustainable mobility network across the Nagpur Metropolitan Region.
