The procedure to appoint a new Vice Chancellor for Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) is expected to begin within the next one to two weeks, according to senior officials familiar with the development.
Dr Subhash Chaudhari had taken charge as Vice Chancellor in August 2020 but faced two suspensions—first in February 2024 and again in July 2024. He challenged both orders in court, which later declared the suspensions illegal. During his suspension periods, Chancellor-appointed charge was handed to Dr Prashant Bokare, Vice Chancellor of Gondwana University.
In September 2024, Dr Chaudhari passed away. Soon after, following the Governor’s direction, RTMNU convened a joint meeting of the Academic Council and Management Council to recommend a nominee for the search panel responsible for selecting the next Vice Chancellor. As per procedure, the university must put forward a member through these statutory bodies. RTMNU has completed this requirement by nominating Avinash Kumar Agrawal, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur.
The search committee will also include a Member Secretary of Principal Secretary rank, one nominee from the University Grants Commission (UGC), and a Chairman appointed by the Chancellor.
Once the committee is formally constituted, the Chancellor’s office will notify the university to initiate the selection process. This will be followed by the issuance of an advertisement inviting applications for the post.
The appointment procedure will involve scrutiny of applications and shortlisting of eligible candidates. If carried out as scheduled, the entire process is expected to be completed within two months.
