Political parties across Nagpur district are preparing for a major upheaval in local-body reservations after the Supreme Court’s firm enforcement of the 50% ceiling. Fresh reservation data reveals that several Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats have far exceeded the constitutional limit, placing a significant number of OBC seats at imminent risk.
Although elections for these bodies are scheduled for December 2 and the nomination process is complete, the Supreme Court has clarified that it will not halt polling. However, the results of local bodies that breach the ceiling will remain provisional until the next hearing on January 21. This keeps OBC seats across multiple councils in a state of legal uncertainty.
In Nagpur district alone, 8 Municipal Councils and 9 Nagar Panchayats have crossed the 50% reservation mark. Some cases are drastic: Kanhan-Pipri Municipal Council has 75% reservation, while Bhivapur and Mahadula Nagar Panchayats stand at 70.59%. Other bodies — including Kamptee, Godhani Railway, Kandri Kanhan, Nildoh, Yerkheda, Besa-Pipla, and Bidgaon-Tarodi — also show sharply inflated reservation ratios. Once the State Election Commission realigns these bodies with the Supreme Court’s directions, OBC seats are expected to be cut substantially.
The Nagpur Zilla Parishad is similarly affected. Of its 57 seats, only 28 may legally be reserved, yet the current chart lists 33 reserved positions. Bringing it into compliance will require removing five OBC seats and conducting a fresh women’s reservation lottery, potentially reshaping political alignments in several constituencies.
With the district awaiting the January 21 ruling, the fate of numerous reserved wards — including those in the NMC — now rests entirely on the Supreme Court’s final decision.
