Nagpur witnessed a sudden return of winter chill as cold northern winds swept into the region, pulling the minimum temperature down to 11°C—a drop of four degrees below normal. The city has seen a steep fall of 6.8°C in night temperatures over the past two days, signaling a clear onset of winter in the final week of November.
How the temperature fell
- Nov 26: 17.6°C
- Nov 27: 17.8°C
- Nov 28: 13.6°C
- Nov 29: 11.0°C
According to the meteorological department, there is unlikely to be any immediate relief from the cold. While a cyclonic storm forming over Sri Lanka, South India, and the Bay of Bengal may impact regions like Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana around December 1, Vidarbha remains unaffected for now as winds continue to blow steadily from the north.
A notably cold November
This month has already recorded four days with minimum temperatures of 11°C or below. The season’s lowest so far was on November 17, when the mercury touched 10.5°C. Temperatures stayed low on:
- Nov 16: 10.8°C
- Nov 18: 10.9°C
- Nov 29: 11°C
Daytime temperatures also dip
The daytime temperature, too, has slipped three degrees below normal, settling at 27.6°C. In the past 24 hours alone, it dropped by 0.8°C. The chill becomes more pronounced after sunset as cold winds continue to sweep through the city.
On Saturday morning, humidity stood at 70%, but as north-northwesterly winds picked up, the temperature began falling rapidly.
If the wind direction shifts in the coming days, Vidarbha may once again see cloud cover, but for now, the cold is expected to persist.
