Apple and Samsung will meet government officials to discuss the Centre’s directive requiring the Sanchar Saathi fraud-reporting app to be pre-installed on all mobile phones, sources said. Both companies are expected to seek a “middle path,” as Apple is reportedly unable to implement the order in its current form.
On November 28, the Department of Telecom (DoT) ordered all phone makers and importers to ensure the app is pre-installed on new devices and pushed through software updates on existing ones. Phones made or imported after 90 days from the order must have the app, and companies must report compliance within 120 days.
Kharge calls move ‘attempt to silence people’
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the directive, calling it an attempt by the BJP to “strangulate the voice of the people” and comparing it to authoritarian rule.
