Nagpur’s landscape is set for a striking transformation as Barbate Udyan in Lakadganj prepares to become a full-scale Cactus and Rock Garden, introducing Central India to its first urban desert ecosystem. Newly accessed project documents show that the ₹2.22-crore development is far more research-driven and scientifically crafted than earlier reports suggested.
Spread across 2.75 acres, the garden will feature multiple thematic zones, including cactus-lined avenues, shaded succulent alleys, mound plantations and a dramatic Special Attraction Zone. The project includes over 40 cactus species, ranging from familiar varieties like Agave Americana and Golden Barrel to rare specimens such as Ariocarpus Godzilla, Trigonus and Colliflower. The centrepiece will be the towering Saguaro “King of Cactus,” rising over ten feet.
To ensure scientific execution, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has mandated supervision by a Cactus Expert with over 10 years of experience, an unusually specialised requirement for an urban garden. The design focuses on sustainability, with cacti requiring up to 90% less water than traditional plants—ideal for Nagpur’s rising heat and water stress.
Expected to be completed in 10 months, the garden promises a visually arresting, low-maintenance public attraction.
“This garden is Nagpur’s step into climate-smart urban design,” said Additional Commissioner and Garden Department HOD Vaishnavi B. “Cactus landscapes are living sculptures, and Barbate Garden will showcase species rarely seen in India.”
