Nagpur Rural has received a major connectivity boost with the state government formally recognising 29 long-neglected village roads as public Gramin Marg, adding 75 km to the district’s official road network for the first time in more than two decades. The last time such a large batch of unlisted roads was incorporated was during the 2001–2021 Rural Roads Development Scheme.
These roads—though crucial for daily life—existed only on the ground, not in government records. Important stretches such as Hudkeshwar Khurd–Jachkna, Jakarna-pur–Japhalkapar, Aivali Shiw–Takli Shiw Nadi, Japhalkapar–Dhamna, Dhamna Gaon–Hudkeshwar Khurd Nadi, Khapri Subhedar–Rajhamsabai, and several others like Sonegaon (Bori)–Rama, Bothali–Wakeshwar, Kawtha–Mangli, Rama–Pohee, and Mohgaon–Sutgirni, were heavily used but remained outside all development plans.
Without recognition, these routes received no government funding, leading to severe deterioration. During monsoons, many became muddy and unsafe, delaying ambulances, stranding school buses and increasing transport losses for farmers.
With official classification, all 29 roads are now eligible for government-funded resurfacing, widening, drainage work and regular maintenance. The Public Works Department and Zilla Parishad will ensure all-weather functionality. The district’s recognised rural road network has now increased from 8086.89 km to 8161.89 km.
Villagers say the long-awaited recognition finally brings dignity and development to the roads they rely on every day.
