Despite rules requiring formal government approval, several ration shops in Nagpur city continue to operate under partnership arrangements without any official government order, raising serious concerns over irregularities in the Food and Civil Supplies Department.
Many of these shops were reportedly cleared years ago through dubious approvals issued by a former rationing officer, who allegedly used the Nagpur Deputy Registrar’s Office to grant partnership orders—a power legally held only by the minister concerned. Though such malpractice was flagged earlier, activists allege that these unauthorized shops continue to receive protection even today.
RTI activists seeking information on these shops say the department is avoiding responses.
Activist Sandeep Riyal wrote to the department and sought details regarding three such shops—Kamlesh Traders (Hansapuri), Ghanshyam Traders (Juni Mangalwari), and Jai Ambe Traders (Chitaroli). He demanded to know who currently operates these shops and who receives the commission. Riyal also wrote to the Chief Minister, Food and Civil Supplies Minister, and Principal Secretary, requesting an inquiry, but no clarification has been issued so far.
Some ration dealers claim that several more shops continue to operate illegally without government sanction, yet they are still allotted foodgrain quotas—highlighting possible ongoing administrative negligence.
