The unveiling ceremony of Maharashtra State Transport Department’s mascot ‘Zebru’, an innovative initiative as the Road Safety Awareness Ambassador, was held with great enthusiasm in Nagpur. The grand event, organized on 9 December in the Cabinet Hall of the Vidhan Bhavan, witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, officials, and a large number of citizens from Nagpur and across the state.
The ‘Zebru’ mascot was unveiled at the hands of the Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis.
The event was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse, Public Health & Family Welfare Minister Prakash Abitkar, Public Works Minister Shivendrasinghraje Bhosale, Minister of State (Transport) Madhuri Misal, Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Sethi (Transport & Ports Department), and Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar.
‘Zebru’ is the official Road Safety Awareness Ambassador of the State of Maharashtra. Inspired by the stripes of a zebra, ‘Zebru’ aims to create awareness among people about road safety, discipline, and traffic rules.
It effectively communicates essential messages such as pedestrian safety, use of zebra crossings, wearing helmets and seat belts, following speed limits, maintaining lane discipline, giving priority to pedestrians, and responsible driving.
‘Zebru’ is an innovative mascot symbolizing helmets, caution signs, and zebra crossings, created to deliver road safety messages more effectively.
The concept aims to build greater awareness in society. With the increasing population, the number of vehicles in Maharashtra has also grown. In recent times, violations of traffic rules have become a major cause of rising accidents. Against this backdrop, ‘Zebru’ is a mascot designed to catch the attention of all motorists and emphasize the importance of following rules.
Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis said,“Zebru is not just a mascot but a messenger that will raise awareness among every citizen of Maharashtra. While road safety is a government initiative, its success depends on active public participation. If the youth, parents, teachers, and those active on social media carry forward the message of Zebru, we can take a big step towards an accident-free Maharashtra. Keeping our roads safe is a collective responsibility, and I am confident that ‘Zebru’ will make this awareness campaign more effective.”
Transport Minister Shri Pratap Sarnaik said,“‘Zebru’ has been created to bring a new dimension to road safety initiatives. In schools, colleges, public events, and digital platforms, Zebru will interact directly with citizens. Following traffic rules is not just about avoiding fines but about safeguarding our own and others’ lives.
The Maharashtra Transport Department continues to introduce innovative initiatives to strengthen the road safety culture, and ‘Zebru’ will give a broad and effective direction to these efforts.”
All dignitaries emphasized that the ‘Zebru’ mascot aims to spread the message of road safety in a simple, understandable, and appealing manner.
The initiative is expected to play a vital role in inculcating a safety culture, especially among youth and students. Concluding the event, the message “Road Safety – Life Safety” was reiterated, emphasizing that road safety is not just a government campaign but a collective responsibility of every citizen.
