Nagpur: Nagpur Traffic Police have achieved a major breakthrough in road safety enforcement, strengthening traffic discipline through strict action against dangerous driving behaviour. During a recent National Lok Adalat, police secured convictions in 251 cases of drunk driving, with courts imposing cumulative penalties of ₹34.60 lakh on offenders. In addition, seven cases of minor driving were penalised, sending out a strong message of zero tolerance towards juvenile driving violations that often lead to serious and fatal accidents.
Officials said the firm action is in line with national road safety concerns, as drunk driving accounts for nearly 8 to 10 per cent of fatal road accidents across the country, while underage driving continues to be one of the most significant behavioural risk factors. Nagpur’s focused enforcement, they added, is aligned with road safety guidelines recommended by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.
The impact of the U-Turn Operation, launched by Nagpur City Police to curb wrong-side driving, unsafe turns and chaotic junction behaviour, has been particularly encouraging. Through redesigning critical turning points, increasing on-ground patrol visibility and enforcing lane discipline, the initiative has contributed to a reduction of nearly 80 road fatalities this year compared to previous trends.
Transport safety studies have consistently shown that unsafe U-turns and wrong-side driving are responsible for a large share of intersection-related crashes in urban India. Targeted enforcement under the U-Turn Operation has therefore improved pedestrian safety, reduced head-on collisions and ensured smoother traffic movement across key junctions in Nagpur.
Police officials said the sustained progress has been possible due to strong institutional coordination, with the Joint Commissioner of Police (Nagpur City) and DCP (Traffic) closely supervising the drive through daily reviews and strategic deployment of manpower to strengthen traffic discipline citywide.
Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, IPS, said Nagpur Police is working with a clear objective of transforming the city into one of the most disciplined traffic cities in the country. “We are taking strict and continuous action against all forms of violations, including drunk driving, minor driving, wrong-side driving and unsafe turns. Our enforcement is firm and uncompromising, with the sole aim of reducing accidents and ensuring the safety of every citizen,” he said.
