The Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway will soon be equipped with dedicated trauma care centres and air ambulance services to ensure quicker medical assistance for accident victims. Minister of State Meghana Bordikar informed the Legislative Council on Friday that proposals for both facilities are ready and will be implemented shortly.
She was responding to concerns raised by MLC Milind Narvekar, who drew attention to the sharp rise in fatal accidents on the expressway. Narvekar said accidents on the corridor have increased by 26%, with fatal crashes rising from 68 in 2024 to 94 in 2025, and the death toll reaching 107 so far this year.
Addressing the issue, Bordikar said the expressway itself is not at fault. “Over three crore commuters have travelled on the Samruddhi Expressway so far. Most accidents occur due to over-speeding, poor tyre maintenance and driving under the influence of alcohol,” she said.
To improve emergency response, the government has already signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with 14 multi-speciality hospitals located at various points between Nagpur and Mumbai. These hospitals will act as key centres for providing rapid medical care to accident victims.
During the discussion, Deputy Chairperson of the Council Dr Neelam Gorhe pointed out that although the government claims several snack corners, restrooms and other amenities are available along the expressway, many of these facilities are not visible on Google Maps. She suggested that listing these locations online would help commuters locate them easily.
Bordikar said that currently around 22 fuel stations with restroom facilities are operational along the Samruddhi Expressway.
