Amid speculation that elections to the Nagpur and Chandrapur municipal corporations could be delayed due to issues related to the 50 per cent reservation cap, it has now emerged that polls for all 29 municipal corporations in the state will be held in a single phase. Voting is expected to take place in the third week of January.
The 50 per cent reservation ceiling has been exceeded only in Nagpur and Chandrapur, leading to claims that elections in these two civic bodies would be postponed until the issue is resolved. However, sources in the State Election Commission (SEC) have dismissed such reports.
According to SEC officials, the Supreme Court’s order does not prohibit conducting elections in civic bodies where the reservation limit has crossed 50 per cent. Elections can be held and results declared, though the outcomes for Nagpur and Chandrapur will remain subject to the apex court’s final verdict on OBC reservation and the reservation ceiling.
The SEC is expected to announce the election schedule any day after December 15 and will clearly mention the conditional nature of results for Nagpur and Chandrapur while releasing the programme.
