The Centre has sanctioned railway projects worth ₹89,780 crore in Maharashtra, covering 38 projects with a total length of 5,098 km, the government said on Saturday. These include 11 new railway lines, two gauge conversion projects and 25 doubling works, approved as of April 1, 2025.
During the last three financial years—2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25—and the current financial year 2025-26, a total of 98 railway surveys have also been sanctioned in the state. These comprise 29 new line surveys, two gauge conversion surveys and 67 doubling surveys, covering a combined length of 8,603 km.
In addition, platform extension works at 34 stations have been taken up to enable operations of 15-car Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains.
To boost capacity in the Mumbai suburban network, the Railways have sanctioned major projects under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). These include MUTP-II at a cost of ₹8,087 crore, MUTP-III costing ₹10,947 crore, and MUTP-IIIA with an outlay of ₹33,690 crore.
As part of these initiatives, 238 rakes of 12-car trains equipped with doors have been approved under MUTP-III and MUTP-IIIA at a cost of ₹19,293 crore. The procurement process for these rakes is currently underway.
The Railway Ministry also said that construction work on the flagship Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Bullet Train project has gained momentum in Maharashtra. Land acquisition for the project has been completed in full, and construction of bridges, aqueducts and other structures is progressing.
Meanwhile, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), about 178 route km—or nearly 12 per cent of its total length—passes through Maharashtra. Of this, around 76 km between New Gholvad and New Vaitarna has already been commissioned, the ministry added.
