With the New Year celebrations approaching, City Police have launched a special drive to curb drunk and rash driving by setting up 131 checkpoints across the city. The campaign, being conducted under Operation U-Turn, will run from December 22 to December 31, Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal said at a press conference on Monday.
Police officials said that a surge in visits to pubs, bars, hotels and party venues on December 31 often leads to a rise in drunk-driving cases, posing serious risks to motorists, pedestrians and other road users.To prevent accidents and ensure public safety, checks have been intensified citywide.Checks at key locationsAs part of the drive, traffic police teams will man 131 checkpoints at strategic locations in Nagpur every day from evening hours till 2 am. Drivers suspected of consuming alcohol will be tested on the spot using breathalyser machines available at each checkpoint.
Strict action will also be taken against other traffic violations, including riding without helmets, triple riding on two-wheelers, wrong-side driving, overspeeding and rash driving, particularly by youths. The Commissioner of Police warned that no leniency will be shown to violators during the campaign period.
