Stay alert, stay alive—the “battery-powered brigade” is coming up fast from behind. Once known for its calm roads and orange-scented breeze, Nagpur’s Green City image is rapidly giving way to a far less reassuring reputation: a city where traffic feels like a daily adventure sport.
If you think congestion is due to population growth or unfinished infrastructure, think again. The real game-changers on Nagpur’s roads are the silent, unpredictable e-rickshaws—appearing out of nowhere, vanishing just as quickly, and leaving behind confusion, dents and frayed tempers.
Driving through busy areas such as Sitabuldi, Itwari and Mahal now feels less like commuting and more like starring in a stunt show. Traffic signals don’t seem to apply to these vehicles, side mirrors appear optional, and road rules are treated more as friendly advice than binding law.
Their drivers often behave as if they own the road, while everyone else is just passing through. Abrupt stops in the middle of traffic to pick up passengers are routine, and those stuck behind are expected to simply cope.
Overloaded, Overconfident and Unchecked
E-rickshaws are frequently packed beyond capacity, squeezed tighter than an overfilled suitcase. Their near-silent motors make them especially risky, sneaking up without warning and often ending their journey pressed firmly against another vehicle’s bumper.
For many, No Entry signs are optional, One Way roads are imaginary, and questioning their actions is met with blank stares. In school and hospital zones—once quiet and orderly—e-rickshaws park haphazardly, blocking access and choking traffic, even as ambulances struggle to get through.
In narrow lanes, they weave through traffic with alarming confidence, while at crossings and signals they gather in clusters that resemble political rallies. Scraped vehicles and startled drivers are simply collateral damage.
Luck, Not Skill, Keeps the City Moving
These days, reaching home safely in Nagpur—without dents or elevated blood pressure—feels less like good driving and more like good fortune. On the roads, e-rickshaws have become the ultimate authority, seemingly above traffic courts and enforcement alike.
Authorities Look Away
The chaos is no secret. Yet, questions remain unanswered: who will regulate, register, assign routes or enforce discipline? From the Transport Department and RTO to the Traffic Police, the collective silence suggests a system overwhelmed—or unwilling to act.
Until clear policies, mandatory registration, route discipline and strict enforcement are put in place, Nagpur’s commuters will continue to gamble with their safety every day.
For now, on Nagpur’s roads, luck and miracles remain the only protective gear against this unchecked, battery-powered menace.
