A Christmas celebration at a city club ended in tragedy after a violent altercation near Pride Square on Wardha Road in the early hours of Friday, leaving one youth dead and another critically injured. The incident occurred around 4 am on December 26, within the jurisdiction of Sonegaon police station.
According to police, a group of people had gathered at Dabo Club to celebrate Christmas. After the party concluded, a dispute broke out between two groups near an XUV 700 vehicle parked close to Hotel Pride Square. The verbal argument quickly escalated into a physical scuffle.
During the clash, the accused, identified as Mehul Rahate, allegedly attacked Pranay Naresh Nannaware (28), a resident of the Mahal area near Sachin Pohe Wale, and Gaurav Brijlal Karda (34), a resident of Flat No. 307, Devyog Apartment, near Chikhli Deepti Signal on Kalamna Road. Police said the accused assaulted both victims on the rib area using sharp weapons, including an iron rod and bricks, causing serious injuries.
Both injured youths were immediately rushed to Orange City Hospital, Nagpur. However, Pranay Nannaware succumbed to his injuries during treatment and was declared dead by doctors. Gaurav Karda remains admitted to the ICU, where his condition is stated to be critical.
Police have begun recording statements of eyewitnesses and are conducting a spot panchnama as part of the investigation. The accused, Mehul Rahate, has been taken into custody, and further legal action is underway.
It may be noted that due to Christmas celebrations, clubs in the city were permitted to operate until 5 am, during which the incident took place. Police are continuing investigations to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the attack.
