A Christmas party at the CP Club in Civil Lines descended into violence late Wednesday night after a dispute allegedly linked to abusive remarks made in the name of a BJP MLA, leaving a youth injured and prompting police action.
Sadar police have registered a case of assault against Akshay Muglewar (29), a resident of Ravi Nagar Square. The injured victim has been identified as Sarvottam Sanjay Kothari (32), who resides at Shirish Apartments in Ramdaspeth. The incident has once again put the upscale club under scrutiny for law-and-order issues during private gatherings.
According to sources, the Christmas party was organised on the night of December 24 at the 1901 Lounge of CP Club. Kothari was reportedly invited by Suraj Devani, son of liquor businessman and club committee member Girish Devani. Several prominent city personalities, including Muglewar, were present at the gathering, and the two men were known to each other.
Around 1.30 am, Muglewar allegedly began hurling abuses while invoking the name of a BJP MLA in connection with the Hingna Nagar Panchayat elections. Kothari objected to the language and attempted to calm him down, requesting that he refrain from using abusive words. He also reportedly tried to inform the MLA about the incident over a phone call.
Police sources said Muglewar, allegedly enraged by this, attacked Kothari with a liquor glass, causing serious injuries to his face and ear. Panic and chaos followed at the venue, and Kothari was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.
After the assault during the late-night liquor party, CP Club officials initially attempted to resolve the matter internally. However, as the situation escalated, the police were alerted. Sadar police later registered a case against Muglewar and launched further investigation into the incident.
