Nagpur: In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across two states, a mother and her son allegedly attempted suicide at a hotel in Nagpur, resulting in the death of the son while the mother remains in a critical condition. The deceased has been identified as Suraj, while the critically injured woman is his mother Jayanti. Both are residents of Bengaluru, police said.
According to preliminary information, Suraj had got married just a few months ago. On Thursday, his wife allegedly died by suicide in Bengaluru. Her family accused Suraj and his relatives of harassment over dowry demands and staged a protest outside a local police station in Bengaluru, demanding strict action.
Amid the ongoing protest in Bengaluru, Jayanti and Suraj reportedly travelled to Nagpur and checked into a local hotel. It was during their stay at the hotel that the duo allegedly attempted suicide. Suraj died during treatment, while Jayanti was rushed to a hospital, where her condition is stated to be critical.
Police have registered an accidental death case and are probing the circumstances leading to the incident. Investigators are also coordinating with Bengaluru police to ascertain whether the developments are directly linked to the alleged dowry harassment case and the protest by the deceased woman’s family.
Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and responsibility in both cases.
