The nomination and withdrawal process for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections has concluded, leaving 992 candidates in the fray for the city’s 151 civic seats, officials said.
A total of 1,294 valid nominations were filed across all zones, of which 302 candidates withdrew. While 12 withdrawals took place on January 1, as many as 290 candidates pulled out on January 2, reflecting intense last-minute negotiations among political parties.
Zone-wise data shows that Aasinagar zone recorded the highest number of valid nominations at 180, indicating stiff competition. In contrast, Lakadganj zone saw the maximum withdrawals at 43, suggesting consolidation of candidates ahead of the polls.
Meanwhile, an unusual incident was reported from Prabhag 13-D, involving the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Kisan Gawande. Despite receiving the party’s A-B form, Gawande was asked to withdraw his nomination following an internal decision. His supporters reportedly protested the move, leading to a tense situation at his residence.
The matter was later resolved after intervention by former minister and MLA Parinay Fuke, after which Gawande withdrew his nomination, citing party discipline.
With the nomination process complete, political parties are now set to intensify campaigning across the city, with several wards expected to witness multi-cornered contests.
