Passengers at Nagpur Railway Station are set to lose the convenience of prepaid auto-rickshaw services, as authorities have ordered the removal of the long-standing facility.
The railway administration has formally directed the booth operator to dismantle the service point, which has been functioning for several years. Anticipating possible resistance, the Railway Police have issued a preventive notice warning against any law-and-order issues during the removal process.
The decision is expected to deprive travellers of the safety and transparency that prepaid auto services typically offer at major transport hubs.
The move has sparked disappointment and anger among auto drivers associated with the booth. They claim the prepaid auto service has been operating in accordance with established rules and has been a reliable convenience for passengers.
According to them, the sudden directive threatens their livelihood.
However, in its official communication, the railway administration stated that the prepaid auto booth located near the western gate was being operated illegally.
When asked to produce authorization or contractual documents, the organization managing the booth failed to do so. Officials also found that the fare list approved by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) was not displayed.
Additionally, fares were being collected at the destination instead of at the prepaid counter, which is a violation of prescribed norms.
Citing these irregularities, the railway administration ordered the booth to be vacated.
Referring to the same letter, the Railway Police have warned booth operator Altaf Ansari that any arguments, altercations, or attempts to disturb law and order during the removal will invite strict action against those responsible.
