Nagpur woke up to an unusual election spectacle on the morning of December 4, with a convoy of LED-fitted Tata pickup trucks spotted near the Rural RTO office close to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Convention Centre in North Nagpur. The vehicles, mounted with giant LED screens on both sides, introduced a campaign style more commonly seen in Uttar Pradesh elections than in Vidarbha’s municipal polls.
By early morning, around 25 trucks bearing Uttar Pradesh registration numbers had arrived in the city, having travelled from Lucknow, Aligarh and Hardoi. Drivers said the fleet is part of a larger network of nearly 90 LED publicity vehicles operating across states, with 25 currently deployed in Nagpur for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections.
One of the drivers, Faisan Sheikh, said the vehicles are being used for BJP campaign publicity. “We move wherever elections are held. After Nagpur, we will head to West Bengal,” he said.
The trucks were undergoing mandatory verification at the Rural RTO, accompanied by tempos carrying generators and technical equipment. Once cleared, they are expected to fan out across different prabhags, playing campaign videos and slogans.
Political observers say the arrival of UP-style LED trucks highlights how even civic elections are now being fought with professional, high-voltage campaign tools, marking a visible shift in Nagpur’s traditional electioneering style.
