HDFC Bank has overhauled the rules for complimentary airport lounge access on its debit cards, introducing a digital voucher-based system and raising the minimum spending requirement for most cardholders. The revised norms came into effect on Friday, January 10.
Under the new framework, eligible debit cardholders will no longer be able to access airport lounges by swiping their physical cards. Instead, lounge entry will be allowed only through digital vouchers issued to customers who meet the prescribed spending criteria. Once eligibility is confirmed, HDFC Bank will send an SMS or email containing a link to claim the voucher. Customers must complete OTP verification using their registered mobile number, after which a voucher code or QR code will be generated and presented at the lounge for entry.
Minimum Spend Requirement Increased
HDFC Bank has doubled the quarterly spend requirement for complimentary lounge access on most debit cards. Cardholders must now spend at least ₹10,000 per calendar quarter, up from ₹5,000 earlier. The spend can be through one or multiple transactions, conducted online or offline.
However, the revised spending condition does not apply to the Infiniti Debit Card, which will continue to offer complimentary lounge access without any minimum spend requirement. New debit cardholders will also need to meet the ₹10,000 quarterly spend threshold to become eligible.
Only purchase transactions made using the debit card will be considered for calculating the quarterly spend. Transactions such as ATM cash withdrawals, UPI or wallet payments (including GPay, PhonePe and Paytm), credit card bill payments made via debit card, and debit card EMI transactions will not be counted.
Complimentary Visits Unchanged
The number of complimentary lounge visits remains unchanged and continues to depend on the debit card variant:
- Millennia Debit Card: 1 visit per quarter
- Platinum Debit Card: 2 visits per quarter
- Times Points Debit Card: 1 visit per quarter
- Business Debit Card: 2 visits per quarter
- GIGA Debit Card: 1 visit per quarter
- Infiniti Debit Card: 4 visits per quarter
Voucher Validity and Lounge Rules
Once issued, lounge vouchers will remain valid until the end of the next calendar quarter. For example, a voucher generated on November 15, 2025, will be valid until March 31, 2026, while one generated on January 10, 2026, will be valid until June 30, 2026.
Lounge access will continue to be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Lounges retain the right to impose stay limits—typically two to three hours—or deny entry due to operational, safety or regulatory reasons.
What It Means for Customers
With the updated programme, HDFC Bank has placed greater emphasis on higher card usage and digital verification. Customers who rely on complimentary lounge benefits will need to closely monitor their quarterly spending and note that physical debit card swipes will no longer work for lounge access from January 10.
