In a unanimous and uncontested decision, Nitin Nabin has been elected as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party said a total of 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in his support, with no other contender entering the race. The development underscores the broad consensus and backing Nabin enjoys across party ranks. He succeeds JP Nadda, who currently serves as Health Minister in the Modi government.
Nabin’s nomination papers were submitted to Returning Officer K Laxman by Health Minister JP Nadda and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in the presence of senior leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and BJP leaders Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupendra Yadav and Kiren Rijiju. Subsequently, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, along with several state leaders, submitted another set of nomination papers endorsing Nabin. The occasion also saw the presence of Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Nayab Singh Saini and Pramod Sawant. Leaders from Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, Jharkhand and other states also extended formal support by filing nomination papers in his favour.
Who is Nitin Nabin?
A senior BJP leader from Bihar, Nitin Nabin has emerged as a key figure in the state’s political arena. Born in Patna, he is the son of late Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, a veteran BJP leader and former MLA. After his father’s untimely death, Nabin entered active politics and steadily built his own standing within the party.
He has been a long-time representative of the Bankipur Assembly constituency in Patna and is known for his strong grassroots connect. Nabin has secured consecutive electoral victories in the Assembly elections of 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025, in addition to winning a by-election in 2006. In the most recent Bihar Assembly polls, he registered a decisive victory, defeating his closest rival by a margin exceeding 51,000 votes.
During the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar, Nabin held key portfolios including Road Construction and Urban Development. He later stepped down from the ministerial role after being appointed BJP’s working president. Within the organisation, he is widely recognised not only for his electoral success but also for playing a significant role in sustaining the BJP’s alliance with the JD(U), a partnership seen as vital to the NDA’s political success in Bihar.
