A case initially registered as an accidental death has taken a dramatic turn after police confirmed that a 23-year-old woman was murdered and the crime was staged to appear as suicide in Nagpur’s Mankapur area.
The deceased, Prachi Hemraj Khapekar (23), a resident of Rajlaxmi Society in Collector Colony, Godhni, was found hanging in the bedroom on the upper floor of her house on January 19 between 11 am and 11.30 am. Following information given by her mother, Rukmini Khapekar (55), Mankapur police had registered an accidental death.
However, the post-mortem conducted at Mayo Hospital revealed crucial evidence pointing to homicide. Doctors, in the preliminary autopsy report, stated that Prachi died due to a severe head injury. Investigators believe that an unidentified person assaulted her with a weapon, killing her, and later attempted to mislead authorities by hanging the body to make it appear as suicide, thereby destroying evidence.
Based on a complaint lodged by Police Sub-Inspector Uddhav Pokharkar on behalf of the state, Mankapur police registered a case against an unknown accused under Sections 103(1), 238(a), and 238(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Cops are carrying out further investigation to identify the accused and establish the sequence of events.
