More than 8,000 employees will face disciplinary action for ignoring duties during municipal corporation elections. Elections in 29 municipal corporations were held on January 15. The government took decision to initiate action against these employees. Most of the employees are under Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and include those from nationalised banks, BEST, BSNL, HPCL, insurance companies, LIC, MHADA, MTNL, Postal Department, Railways, RCF, NABARD etc.
As per directives issued by the Election Commission of India, election duty is mandatory under the Constitution and cannot be avoided without genuine reason. The employees will be issued the show cause notice, and action will be taken if their reply is not satisfactory. The action includes reduction in wages or stopping it, negative mark in the service record, initiating departmental enquiry, suspension in serious cases, and criminal cases.
