Nagpur’s municipal leadership is set to have a woman mayor in February, as the post has been reserved for the General Women category. The announcement, issued by the Mantralaya on Thursday, has triggered active campaigning among women corporators across the city, especially within BJP ranks, as aspirants position themselves for the prestigious role.
The Municipal Corporation Secretariat has forwarded a proposal related to the mayoral election to the Municipal Commissioner.
Following the Commissioner’s approval, the proposal will be sent to the Divisional Commissioner.
According to the proposal, the official process for the mayoral election is scheduled to be completed on February 4, 2026.
At a glance:
January 15: Voting completed
January 16: BJP victory confirmed
January 22: Reservation announced (General Women)
February 4: Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor (subject to change)
The mayoral selection will be conducted as per the directions of the Divisional Commissioner, after which the city’s first citizen will be decided.
As outlined in the proposal, nominations for the mayor’s post can be filed on January 30, while polling is slated for February 4.
Senior officials have indicated that even if there are minor changes, the election may be shifted by a day or two, but the appointment of the new mayor is certain to take place in the first week of February.
Several senior women corporators are currently in the fray, including Neeta Thakre, Divya Dhurde, Sadhana Barde, Ashwini Jichkar, Shivani Dani and Vishakha Mohod. Intense lobbying by women leaders for the mayoral post has already begun.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to visit Nagpur on January 27, and it is likely that the decision regarding the mayoral candidate will be finalised on the same day.
The candidate approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will be declared the Mayor of Nagpur.
