The taxiway at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, is set to become the longest in the country following a proposed extension under the MIHAN–SEZ project. The original plan to extend the taxiway up to the aviation hub land at Isasni has now been revised to include an additional 600 metres.
With this expansion, the link taxiway will measure 2 km, up from the earlier proposed length of 1,400 metres. When combined with the existing taxiway, the total length will reach 5,400 metres, making it the longest airport taxiway in India once completed.
Under the MIHAN–SEZ project, about 300 acres of land from a 500-acre area near Telhara Lake have been earmarked for the aviation hub. In December 2024, a proposal for a 1,400-metre link taxiway up to Sector 10 of MIHAN–SEZ was approved towards the end of 2025. Sources said that growing interest from companies in the aviation hub has prompted authorities to submit a proposal for a further 600-metre extension, which is expected to receive approval soon.
Earlier, the estimated cost of constructing the link taxiway was around ₹100 crore. With the proposed increase in length, the project cost is now likely to rise to approximately ₹150 crore.
Shivangaon Road Gate Likely to Close
The gate on Shivangaon Road along the existing 3.4-km taxiway, which connects Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport to the Air India and Indamer MRO facilities in MIHAN–SEZ, is likely to be closed later this year. Sources said that after the Union Budget, the remaining 350 houses in Shivangaon may be rehabilitated. Once this process is completed, the gate will be permanently shut and the entire taxiway will fall within the airport’s operational area.
The taxiway extension is also expected to boost overall airport development, as investor interest in vacant land in Sector 10 is likely to increase after the project is completed.
