The city has been included in the list of “growth hubs” announced by the Union finance minister in her Budget speech on Sunday and is set to receive around ₹5,000 crore for the development of its metropolitan region over the next five years.
However, clarity is still lacking on which agency will be responsible for executing the development work. Sources suggest that the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) may be assigned the role, as it is already overseeing the ambitious International Business and Finance Centre (IBFC) project spread across Godhni and Ladgaon villages in Hingna taluka.Funding for the IBFC is being arranged through HUDCO, while the ₹5,000 crore allocated for the growth hub may be utilised to support new development projects planned by NMRDA.
Experts noted that the Centre has already extended significant financial support to the city in recent years, citing projects such as the two phases of Nagpur Metro and the Nag River Rejuvenation Project. The Union government has already approved ₹1,720 crore for Nagpur Metro Phase II.
