The long-pending widening of Old Bhandara Road, covering a 3-kilometre stretch from Mayo Hospital to Sunil Hotel in Satranjipura, has finally picked up pace after nearly four years.
On Thursday afternoon, District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar personally inspected the area, walking from Mayo Hospital to Shahid Square and urging residents and shopkeepers to vacate the marked spaces, signalling that the project will now move forward without further delays.
Earlier, the responsibility for land demarcation and compensation was with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), but it was transferred to the Public Works Department (PWD) in January 2025. Initially, only about 200 metres of concrete road was constructed near the Mayo Hospital entrance before the work stalled due to pending land acquisition issues.
The project, for which the work order was issued on September 18, 2021, was originally scheduled to be completed within 18 months. At present, the road is only 6 metres wide. After widening, it will measure 18 metres from Mayo Hospital to Bagdadi Chowk and 30 metres from Bagdadi Square to Sunil Hotel. The total cost of the project is estimated at ?70 crore.
Once completed, the widened road will allow city buses to operate on the route, reduce traffic congestion on Central Avenue, and improve travel convenience. The project also includes construction of sewage lines along the road to address waterlogging issues, along with footpaths and a central divider to ensure smoother and safer traffic movement.
