The Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road has added a unique distinction to its name as India’s first musical road was inaugurated on Tuesday near Amarsons Garden. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis flagged off the innovative feature, which plays the world-famous “Jai Ho” tune from Slumdog Millionaire as vehicles pass over specially crafted road strips.
During the demonstration ride, CM Fadnavis, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, former MP Rahul Shewale, BMC Additional Commissioner Avinash Dhakne, and Hungary’s Consul General Frank Jari, experienced the melody firsthand as their vehicle drove over the musical ribs.
How the Musical Road Works
The feature is powered by advanced Hungarian road-music technology. In the first phase, a 500-meter stretch of musical strips has been installed on the right lane of the coastal road. When vehicles travel at a speed of 60–70 km/h, friction between the tires and the precisely spaced grooves produces a rhythmic tune—audible only to passengers inside the vehicle.
CM Fadnavis described the project as a creative blend of cutting-edge international engineering and India’s musical identity, adding that the new attraction will draw widespread curiosity.
“A Unique Driving Experience,” Says CM Fadnavis
“Motorists will enjoy the experience of hearing ‘Jai Ho’ without any special equipment. This is an innovative concept using modern Hungarian technology,” said Fadnavis, speaking to the media after the event.
He emphasized that the musical road enhances both the cultural appeal and technological profile of Mumbai’s new coastal corridor.
