In an effort to improve road conditions, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had asked its zonal offices to submit lists of damaged roads so that severely deteriorated stretches could be resurfaced using the hot-mix plant.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari personally reviewed the proposal, following which a decision was taken to asphalt 53 kilometres of roads. Accordingly, 46 proposals worth ₹4.37 crore were approved.
However, several proposals submitted by zonal offices included plans for cement concrete roads or drainage works instead of asphalt resurfacing. In many areas, pipeline work under the AMRUT scheme is also underway, preventing tarring on nearly a dozen roads, while in some locations sites were not cleared at all. As a result, only 25.689 kilometres of roads could be resurfaced.
Officials said the delay occurred mainly due to a lack of coordination between zonal officers and engineers, despite the hot-mix department having sufficient material. Incorrect proposals led to the cancellation of asphalting plans in several areas, and even after the commissioner’s push, laxity on the part of assistant municipal commissioners, executive engineers, and other zonal officials caused the work to stall.
