The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MahaRail) is set to open the new six-lane twin cable-stayed Ajni Road Over Bridge (ROB) before the monsoon, replacing the 125-year-old British-era structure and easing traffic between South and Central Nagpur. This timeline was confirmed by the Department in its officials response to media.
The ₹332 crore project is being executed in two phases to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow. A new three-lane cable-stayed bridge is being constructed parallel to the existing bridge. Once this phase is completed — expected by July 2026 — traffic will be diverted to the new structure, after which the old bridge will be demolished to build the second three-lane bridge.
The bridge will feature 52-metre-high pylons and an advanced cable-stayed system. It will also include dynamic LED theme lighting and designated selfie points along pedestrian footpaths to enhance the city’s skyline and boost tourism appeal.
Officials said pylon and girder work is progressing rapidly. Once fully operational, the twin bridges will support dedicated one-way traffic on each side, ensuring smoother transit across the busy Ajni railway crossing.
MahaRail, a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Ministry of Railways, is implementing the project as part of its broader mission to improve rail and road infrastructure across the state.
