In a significant move to improve pedestrian safety and streamline urban transport, Mayor Neeta Thakre has ordered the expansion of the Nagpur Healthy Street programme. During a presentation by ITDP India on February 18, the Mayor stressed the importance of road designs that ensure safety for cyclists, pedestrians and senior citizens, while maintaining smooth vehicular traffic flow.
The initiative, which initially covers Wards 14 and 15, includes the development of one model road in each ward. Architect and urban designer Prasanna Desai presented plans featuring obstruction-free footpaths and dedicated cycle tracks, without altering existing road widths. The designs also provide organised parking spaces for two-wheelers and four-wheelers to help ease congestion.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari stated that modern materials and advanced technologies would be used to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of the selected junctions. Mayor Thakre further directed officials to incorporate feedback from the public and elected representatives into the final designs and to allocate funds for the project’s second phase.
The meeting was attended by Ruling Party Leader Narendra (Balya) Borkar, along with Vinay Dani, Dhanashree Deshpande, Pooja Pathak, Varsha Chaudhary, Vinod Kanhere, Abhijit Jha, Yogita Telang, Madhuri Phulsunge and other members, reflecting a united effort toward creating a more walkable and accessible Nagpur.
