Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has received a major boost after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the long-pending issue preventing the civic body from filling vacant posts has been resolved. Addressing a function at the NMC headquarters on Sunday, Fadnavis said the corporation can now begin recruitment to fill all 17,981 sanctioned posts.
“The issue of establishment cost that was coming in the way of filling vacancies has been resolved. Now, NMC can start fresh recruitment to fill all 17,981 sanctioned posts,” the Chief Minister said.
Earlier, while approving NMC’s revised staffing pattern, the State Government had stipulated that the corporation’s establishment expenditure should not exceed 35 per cent of its total outlay. The condition had significantly restricted recruitment, resulting in thousands of vacant posts.
The announcement was made during a programme where appointment letters were distributed to 579 newly recruited municipal employees. Of these, 476 sanitation workers were appointed under the Lad-Page Committee recommendations, while 103 candidates were recruited through direct recruitment.
Fadnavis also announced that the Lad-Page Committee recommendations have now been extended to sanitation workers employed across all State Government departments, expanding the benefits beyond municipal corporations.
Commending Mayor Neeta Thakre and the civic administration, the Chief Minister praised the launch of the Shram Safalya Housing Scheme for sanitation workers, describing them as the city’s “Swachhata Doots” (cleanliness ambassadors). He assured that lack of funds would not become an obstacle in Nagpur’s journey towards becoming a globally developed city.
During the event, Fadnavis also digitally launched the NMC Transport Department’s WhatsApp ticketing service, which will allow commuters to purchase bus tickets through QR code-based online payments. The programme was presided over by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Mayor Neeta Thakre.
Addressing the gathering, Gadkari congratulated the State Government and the NMC for ensuring job security for sanitation workers. He urged the civic body to strengthen its financial position by developing projects such as Orange Street and commercial complexes while creating public amenities, including e-libraries and swimming pools.
He also appreciated the NMC’s “Waste-to-Wealth” initiatives, particularly biogas production from municipal waste, and stressed the need for transparent governance.
Welcoming the dignitaries, Mayor Thakre described the occasion as a landmark moment in the history of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, saying that providing permanent employment to long-serving sanitation workers would restore dignity and security to many families.
Among those present were Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, MLAs Krishna Khopde and Mohan Mate, Safai Karmachari Commission Chairman Shersingh Dagor, Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar and Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare.
